Reading 1: 2 SM 7:4-5A, 12-14A, 16

The first reading from the Book of Samuel.

That same night, Yahweh’s word came to Nathan, saying, “Go and tell my servant David, ‘When your days are fulfilled and you sleep with your fathers, I will set up your offspring after you, who will proceed out of your body, and I will establish his kingdom.

He will build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

I will be his father, and he will be my son.

Your house and your kingdom will be made sure forever before you. Your throne will be established forever.’_”

Responsorial Psalm: PS 89:1-2, 3-4, 26 and 28

Response: His offspring will endure forever, his throne like the sun before me.

I will sing of the loving kindness of Yahweh forever. With my mouth, I will make known your faithfulness to all generations.

I indeed declare, “Love stands firm forever. You established the heavens. Your faithfulness is in them.”

R: His offspring will endure forever, his throne like the sun before me.

“I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to David, my servant, ‘I will establish your offspring forever, and build up your throne to all generations.’_”

R: His offspring will endure forever, his throne like the sun before me.

He will call to me, ‘You are my Father, my God, and the rock of my salvation!’

I will keep my loving kindness for him forever more. My covenant will stand firm with him.

R: His offspring will endure forever, his throne like the sun before me.

Reading 2: ROM 4:13, 16-18, 22

The second reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans.

For the promise to Abraham and to his offspring that he would be heir of the world wasn’t through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.

For this cause it is of faith, that it may be according to grace, to the end that the promise may be sure to all the offspring, not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all.

As it is written, “I have made you a father of many nations.” This is in the presence of him whom he believed: God, who gives life to the dead, and calls the things that are not, as though they were.

Against hope, Abraham in hope believed, to the end that he might become a father of many nations, according to that which had been spoken, “So will your offspring be.”

Therefore it also was “credited to him for righteousness.”

Verse Before Gospel: PS 84:4

From the Psalms.

Blessed are those who dwell in your house. They are always praising you.

Gospel of the Day: MT 1:16, 18-21, 24A or LK 2:41-51A

From the gospel scripture according to Matthew.

Jacob became the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, from whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was like this: After his mother, Mary, was engaged to Joseph, before they came together, she was found pregnant by the Holy Spirit.

Joseph, her husband, being a righteous man, and not willing to make her a public example, intended to put her away secretly.

But when he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, don’t be afraid to take to yourself Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.

She shall give birth to a son. You shall name him Jesus, for it is he who shall save his people from their sins.”

Joseph arose from his sleep, and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took his wife to himself.

or from the gospel verse according to Luke.

His parents went every year to Jerusalem at the feast of the Passover.

When he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast; and when they had fulfilled the days, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. Joseph and his mother didn’t know it, but supposing him to be in the company, they went a day’s journey; and they looked for him among their relatives and acquaintances.

When they didn’t find him, they returned to Jerusalem, looking for him.

After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the middle of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions.

All who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.

When they saw him, they were astonished; and his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us this way? Behold, your father and I were anxiously looking for you.”

He said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Didn’t you know that I must be in my Father’s house?”

They didn’t understand the saying which he spoke to them.

And he went down with them and came to Nazareth. He was subject to them.
