Daily Gospel Reading for February 9, 2024 – Friday in the Fifth Week of Ordinary Time Bible Verse

The 9th of February, 2024 is Friday in the Fifth Week of Ordinary Time. The Holy Bible verses for the mass readings for this day came from the Liturgical Calendar of the Year 2024.

Reading 1: 1 KGS 11:29-32; 12:19

The first reading from the Book of Kings.

At that time, when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him on the way. Now Ahijah had clad himself with a new garment; and the two of them were alone in the field.

Ahijah took the new garment that was on him, and tore it in twelve pieces.

He said to Jeroboam, “Take ten pieces; for Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, ‘Behold, I will tear the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon and will give ten tribes to you (but he shall have one tribe, for my servant David’s sake and for Jerusalem’s sake, the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel).’_”

So Israel rebelled against David’s house to this day.

Responsorial Psalm: PS 81:9-10AB, 11-12, 13-14

Response: “I am Yahweh, your God”; “Hear, my people.”

“There shall be no strange god in you, neither shall you worship any foreign god.

I am Yahweh, your God, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.”

R: “I am Yahweh, your God”; “Hear, my people.”

“But my people didn’t listen to my voice. Israel desired none of me.

So I let them go after the stubbornness of their hearts, that they might walk in their own counsels.”

R: “I am Yahweh, your God”; “Hear, my people.”

“Oh that my people would listen to me, that Israel would walk in my ways!

I would soon subdue their enemies, and turn my hand against their adversaries.”

R: “I am Yahweh, your God”; “Hear, my people.”

Gospel of the Day: MK 7:31-37

From the gospel scripture according to Mark.

Again he departed from the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and came to the sea of Galilee through the middle of the region of Decapolis.

They brought to him one who was deaf and had an impediment in his speech. They begged him to lay his hand on him.

He took him aside from the multitude privately and put his fingers into his ears; and he spat and touched his tongue.

Looking up to heaven, he sighed, and said to him, “Ephphatha!” that is, “Be opened!”

Immediately his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was released, and he spoke clearly.

He commanded them that they should tell no one, but the more he commanded them, so much the more widely they proclaimed it.

They were astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He makes even the deaf hear and the mute speak!”
