The 4th of August, 2023, Friday is the Memorial of Saint John Vianney, Priest. The Holy Bible verses for the mass readings for this day came from the Liturgical Calendar Year 2023.

Reading 1: LV 23:1, 4-11, 15-16, 27, 34B-37

The first reading from the Book of Leviticus.

Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, “‘These are the set feasts of Yahweh, even holy convocations, which you shall proclaim in their appointed season.

In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month in the evening, is Yahweh’s Passover.

On the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread to Yahweh. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread.

In the first day you shall have a holy convocation. You shall do no regular work.

But you shall offer an offering made by fire to Yahweh seven days. In the seventh day is a holy convocation. You shall do no regular work.’_”

Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the children of Israel, and tell them, ‘When you have come into the land which I give to you, and shall reap its harvest, then you shall bring the sheaf of the first fruits of your harvest to the priest.

He shall wave the sheaf before Yahweh, to be accepted for you. On the next day after the Sabbath the priest shall wave it.’_”

“‘You shall count from the next day after the Sabbath, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the wave offering: seven Sabbaths shall be completed.

The next day after the seventh Sabbath you shall count fifty days; and you shall offer a new meal offering to Yahweh.’_”

“However on the tenth day of this seventh month is the day of atonement. It shall be a holy convocation to you. You shall afflict yourselves and you shall offer an offering made by fire to Yahweh.”

“‘On the fifteenth day of this seventh month is the feast of booths for seven days to Yahweh.

On the first day shall be a holy convocation. You shall do no regular work.

Seven days you shall offer an offering made by fire to Yahweh. On the eighth day shall be a holy convocation to you. You shall offer an offering made by fire to Yahweh. It is a solemn assembly; you shall do no regular work.’_”

“‘These are the appointed feasts of Yahweh which you shall proclaim to be holy convocations, to offer an offering made by fire to Yahweh, a burnt offering, a meal offering, a sacrifice, and drink offerings, each on its own day.’_”

Responsorial Psalm: PS 81:2-3, 4-5, 9-10AB

Response: Sing aloud to God, our strength!

Raise a song, and bring here the tambourine, the pleasant lyre with the harp.

Blow the trumpet at the New Moon, at the full moon, on our feast day.

R: Sing aloud to God, our strength!

For it is a statute for Israel, an ordinance of the God of Jacob.

He appointed it in Joseph for a covenant, when he went out over the land of Egypt, I heard a language that I didn’t know.

R: Sing aloud to God, our strength!

“There shall be no strange god in you, neither shall you worship any foreign god.

I am Yahweh, your God, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.”

R: Sing aloud to God, our strength!

Gospel of the Day: MT 13:54-58

From the gospel scripture according to Matthew.

Coming into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished and said, “Where did this man get this wisdom and these mighty works?

Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother called Mary, and his brothers James, Joses, Simon, and Judas?

Aren’t all of his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all of these things?”

They were offended by him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country and in his own house.”

He didn’t do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.
