The 5th of August, 2022 is Friday in the Eighteenth Week of Ordinary Time. The Bible scriptures for the holy mass readings for this day came from the 2022 Liturgical Calendar.
Reading 1: NA 1:15; 2:2; 3:1-3, 6-7
The first reading from the Book of Nahum.
Behold, on the mountains the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace! Keep your feasts, Judah! Perform your vows, for the wicked one will no more pass through you. He is utterly cut off.
For Yahweh restores the excellency of Jacob as the excellency of Israel, for the destroyers have destroyed them and ruined their vine branches.
Woe to the bloody city! It is all full of lies and robbery-no end to the prey.
The noise of the whip, the noise of the rattling of wheels, prancing horses, and bounding chariots, the horseman charging, and the flashing sword, the glittering spear, and a multitude of slain, and a great heap of corpses, and there is no end of the bodies. They stumble on their bodies.
“I will throw abominable filth on you and make you vile, and will make you a spectacle.
It will happen that all those who look at you will flee from you, and say, ‘Nineveh is laid waste! Who will mourn for her?’ Where will I seek comforters for you?”
Responsorial Psalm: DT 32:35CD-36AB, 39ABCD, 41
Response: “I kill and I make alive.”
“For the day of their calamity is at hand. Their doom rushes at them.”
For Yahweh will judge his people, and have compassion on his servants.
R: “I kill and I make alive.”
“See now that I myself am he. There is no god with me. I kill and I make alive. I wound and I heal.”
R: “I kill and I make alive.”
“If I sharpen my glittering sword, my hand grasps it in judgment; I will take vengeance on my adversaries, and will repay those who hate me.”
R: “I kill and I make alive.”
Gospel of the Day: MT 16:24-28
From the gospel verse according to Matthew.
Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.
For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, and whoever will lose his life for my sake will find it.
For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life? Or what will a man give in exchange for his life?
For the Son of Man will come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will render to everyone according to his deeds.
Most certainly I tell you, there are some standing here who will in no way taste of death until they see the Son of Man coming in his Kingdom.”
Other Celebration
An optional celebration on this day is the Memorial of the Dedication of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome.
