The 29th of July, 2022, Friday is the Memorial of Saints Martha, Mary, and Lazarus. The Holy Bible verses for the mass readings for this day came from the Liturgical Calendar Year 2022.
Reading 1: JER 26:1-9
The first reading from the Book of Jeremiah.
In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came from Yahweh: “Yahweh says: ‘Stand in the court of Yahweh’s house, and speak to all the cities of Judah which come to worship in Yahweh’s house, all the words that I command you to speak to them. Don’t omit a word.
It may be they will listen, and every man turn from his evil way, that I may relent from the evil which I intend to do to them because of the evil of their doings.’_”
You shall tell them, “Yahweh says: ‘If you will not listen to me, to walk in my law which I have set before you, to listen to the words of my servants the prophets whom I send to you, even rising up early and sending them-but you have not listened-then I will make this house like Shiloh, and will make this city a curse to all the nations of the earth.’_”
The priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in Yahweh’s house.
When Jeremiah had finished speaking all that Yahweh had commanded him to speak to all the people, the priests and the prophets and all the people seized him, saying, “You shall surely die!
Why have you prophesied in Yahweh’s name, saying, ‘This house will be like Shiloh, and this city will be desolate, without inhabitant?’_” All the people were crowded around Jeremiah in Yahweh’s house.
Responsorial Psalm: PS 69:4, 7-9, 13
Response: God, in the abundance of your loving kindness, answer me in the truth of your salvation.
Those who hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head. Those who want to cut me off, being my enemies wrongfully, are mighty. I have to restore what I didn’t take away.
R: God, in the abundance of your loving kindness, answer me in the truth of your salvation.
Because for your sake, I have borne reproach. Shame has covered my face.
I have become a stranger to my brothers, an alien to my mother’s children.
For the zeal of your house consumes me. The reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me.
R: God, in the abundance of your loving kindness, answer me in the truth of your salvation.
But as for me, my prayer is to you, Yahweh, in an acceptable time. God, in the abundance of your loving kindness, answer me in the truth of your salvation.
R: God, in the abundance of your loving kindness, answer me in the truth of your salvation.
Gospel of the Day: JN 11:19-27 or LK 10:38-42
From the gospel scripture according to John.
Many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.
Then when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary stayed in the house.
Therefore Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.
Even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.”
Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies.
Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, God’s Son, he who comes into the world.”
or from the gospel verse according to Luke.
As they went on their way, he entered into a certain village, and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.
She had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard his word.
But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she came up to him, and said, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister left me to serve alone? Ask her therefore to help me.”
Jesus answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is needed. Mary has chosen the good part, which will not be taken away from her.”
