The 11th of December, 2021 is Saturday in the Second Week of Advent. The Holy Bible verses for the mass readings for this day came from the Liturgical Calendar of the Year 2022.
Reading 1: SIR 48:1-4, 9-11
The first reading from The Wisdom of Jesus the Son of Sirach or Ecclesiasticus.
Then Elijah arose, the prophet like fire. His word burned like a torch: He brought a famine upon them, and by his zeal made them few in number.
By the word of the Lord he shut up the heavens. He brought down fire three times.
How you were glorified, O Elijah, in your wondrous deeds! Whose glory is like yours?
You were taken up in a tempest of fire, in a chariot of fiery horses.
You were recorded for reproofs in their seasons, to pacify anger, before it broke out into wrath, to turn the heart of the father to the son, and to restore the tribes of Jacob.
Blessed are those who saw you, and those who have been beautified with love; for we also shall surely live.
Responsorial Psalm: PS 80:1AC and 2B, 14-15, 17-18
Response: Turn us again, God. Cause your face to shine, and we will be saved.
Hear us, Shepherd of Israel, you who sit above the cherubim, shine out.
Stir up your might!
R: Turn us again, God. Cause your face to shine, and we will be saved.
Turn again, we beg you, God of Armies. Look down from heaven, and see, and visit this vine, the stock which your right hand planted, the branch that you made strong for yourself.
R: Turn us again, God. Cause your face to shine, and we will be saved.
Let your hand be on the man of your right hand, on the son of man whom you made strong for yourself.
So we will not turn away from you. Revive us, and we will call on your name.
R: Turn us again, God. Cause your face to shine, and we will be saved.
Gospel of the Day: MT 17:9A, 10-13
From the gospel scripture according to Matthew.
As they were coming down from the mountain, his disciples asked him, saying, “Then why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”
Jesus answered them, “Elijah indeed comes first, and will restore all things; but I tell you that Elijah has come already, and they didn’t recognize him, but did to him whatever they wanted to. Even so the Son of Man will also suffer by them.”
Then the disciples understood that he spoke to them of John the Baptizer.
Other Celebration
An optional celebration on this day is the Memorial of Saint Damasus I, Pope.
