Reading 1: SIR 36:1, 5-6A, 11-17

The first reading from The Wisdom of Jesus the Son of Sirach or Ecclesiasticus.

Have mercy upon us, O Lord the God of all, and look at us with favor.

Let them know you, as we also have known you, that there is no God but only you, O God.

Show new signs, and work various wonders.

Gather all the tribes of Jacob together, and take them for your inheritance, as from the beginning.

O Lord, have mercy upon the people that is called by your name, and upon Israel, whom you likened to a firstborn.

Have compassion upon the city of your sanctuary, Jerusalem, the place of your rest.

Fill Zion. Exalt your oracles and fill your people with your glory.

Give testimony to those who were your creatures in the beginning, and fulfill the prophecies that have been spoken in your name.

Reward those who wait for you, and men will put their trust in your prophets.

Listen, O Lord, to the prayer of your servants, according to the blessing of Aaron concerning your people; and all those who are on the earth will know that you are the Lord, the eternal God.

Responsorial Psalm: PS 79:8, 9, 11 and 13

Response: O Lord the God of all, and look at us with favor.

Don’t hold the iniquities of our forefathers against us. Let your tender mercies speedily meet us, for we are in desperate need.

R: O Lord the God of all, and look at us with favor.

Help us, God of our salvation, for the glory of your name. Deliver us, and forgive our sins, for your name’s sake.

R: O Lord the God of all, and look at us with favor.

Let the sighing of the prisoner come before you. According to the greatness of your power, preserve those who are sentenced to death.

So we, your people and sheep of your pasture, will give you thanks forever. We will praise you forever, to all generations.

R: O Lord the God of all, and look at us with favor.

Gospel of the Day: MK 10:32-45

From the gospel scripture according to Mark.

They were on the way, going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus was going in front of them, and they were amazed; and those who followed were afraid. He again took the twelve, and began to tell them the things that were going to happen to him.

“Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem. The Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes. They will condemn him to death, and will deliver him to the Gentiles.

They will mock him, spit on him, scourge him, and kill him. On the third day he will rise again.”

James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came near to him, saying, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we will ask.”

He said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?”

They said to him, “Grant to us that we may sit, one at your right hand and one at your left hand, in your glory.”

But Jesus said to them, “You don’t know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?”

They said to him, “We are able.” Jesus said to them, “You shall indeed drink the cup that I drink, and you shall be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with; but to sit at my right hand and at my left hand is not mine to give, but for whom it has been prepared.”

When the ten heard it, they began to be indignant toward James and John.

Jesus summoned them and said to them, “You know that they who are recognized as rulers over the nations lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.

But it shall not be so among you, but whoever wants to become great among you shall be your servant.

Whoever of you wants to become first among you shall be bondservant of all.

For the Son of Man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
